Ontario Home Renovation Savings: Every Rebate Amount Explained

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings™ program is delivered through Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy (IESO), with support from the Government of Ontario. It bundles most residential efficiency incentives into one place, which makes planning a renovation much simpler than it used to be.

Here is the current rebate list: home energy assessment $600 back; insulation up to $7,700; attic insulation $1,250 (increased from $1,000); air sealing up to $250; windows and doors $100 back per rough opening for ENERGY STAR certified units; heat pump water heaters $500 (ENERGY STAR certified); cold climate air source heat pumps up to $7,500 depending on the size installed; ground source heat pumps up to $12,000 depending on size; smart thermostat $100 (increased from $75); solar panels and battery storage up to $10,000; and appliances up to $200 back.

Most of the envelope and mechanical rebates are tied to a home energy assessment. The assessment typically happens twice — once before the work to establish a baseline, and once afterwards to confirm what was installed. The $600 assessment rebate is designed to offset most of that cost.

Before you start, gather the basics: proof that you own and occupy the home, the age and type of the property, your current heating system, and recent utility bills. Nearly every part of the application asks for some combination of these.

Sequence matters. Doing the building envelope first — air sealing ($250), attic insulation ($1,250), then broader insulation work toward the $7,700 cap — means any heat pump you add later can be smaller, cheaper, and better matched to the house.
